The Making of the Mari Evans Mass. Ave Mural

ABOUT

In 2016, the historic Davlan apartments on 448 Massachusetts Avenue became a canvas for a mural of poet, musician and community activist Mari Evans commissioned by Big Car Collaborative. Selected by Evans herself, artist Michael “ALKEMI” Jordan created the realistic portrait, adding her to the Indy public art lexicon alongside literary and musical artists such as Kurt Vonnegut and Wes Montgomery. Evans spent the majority of her life in Indianapolis, and was one of the founding members of the Black Arts Movement. Her work has had an invaluable influence on the poets of today, and has provided essential commentary on what it means to be Black in Indianapolis.
