Etheridge Knight Sings “Willow Weep for Me”

ABOUT

From the audiobook “Etheridge Lives”, hear Knight burst into song before a reading at Humboldt State University in the 1980s. Knight’s ability to electrify a crowd and bring poetry alive was a skill that delighted adults and students alike.

Knight began writing poetry from behind bars, centering around family and politics. After returning home from the Korean war in the 50s, a serious injury led him to addiction and alcoholism, which also influenced themes in his writing. Dedicated to his craft, after his release he continued writing while being mentored by prolific poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks.
